Troops repel ISWAP attack, recover AK-47s, RPG launcher in Borno

On the morning of August 15, 2026, troops of the Joint Task Force North East, operating under Operation HADIN KAI, successfully thwarted an attack by ISWAP terrorists at Forward Operating Base Mandaragirau in Biu Local Government Area, Borno State. This information was relayed in a statement released by Captain Mohammed Goni, the Acting Military Information Officer of the Joint Task Force. The assault began around 2:00 am, with the terrorists launching a dual assault on the base from two different points.

Surveillance systems alerted the military to the incoming threat, prompting a swift deployment of a combat team to counter the attackers. The troops engaged the ISWAP terrorists in a fierce gun battle, while simultaneously, another unit thwarted an attempt by the militants to infiltrate the base undetected. This coordinated effort compelled the terrorists to retreat. Following the withdrawal, the troops pursued the retreating forces, exploiting the contact area and escape routes utilized by the assailants.

During the operation, several ISWAP militants were reportedly eliminated, and the troops recovered various military equipment. These included AK-47 rifles with live ammunition, an RPG launcher along with its bombs and chargers, a camcorder, and additional equipment. Surveillance footage revealed the terrorists dragging the bodies of some fallen comrades towards the Timbuktu Triangle.

The military reported that no casualties were sustained by its troops during this assault. The Theatre Command lauded the response of the 162 Amphibious Battalion, emphasizing that Operation HADIN KAI is steadfast in its commitment to dominate the battlefield, thwart terrorist actions, and foster lasting peace and security throughout the North East.
