They demolish buildings and tell us they’re building 24-hour markets – Paul Adom-Otchere

Journalist Paul Adom-Otchere, host of Good Evening Ghana, has voiced criticism towards the government's decision to demolish structures to advance its 24-hour economy initiative. At the NPP Ashanti Regional executive elections held at Jubilee Park on Saturday, August 15, Adom-Otchere questioned the removal of buildings, including schools and a bank, to create 24-hour markets.

He expressed that these demolitions were causing frustration among residents, particularly in the Ashanti Region. Adom-Otchere pointed out that the government's focus on markets for the 24-hour economy appears to contradict the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto. He argued that markets have been a part of Ghanaian society for generations, citing Asafo, Adum, Kejetia, and Makola markets as examples.

According to Adom-Otchere, these markets have existed for over 180 years, predating Ghana's independence. He questioned the government's decision to demolish existing structures to build new markets, stating that existing markets should be preserved. Adom-Otchere also alleged that the demolitions and actions of some government officials were increasing public dissatisfaction with the government.

As the government pushes forward with its 24-hour economy agenda, Adom-Otchere noted that voters, especially in the Ashanti Region, are closely watching the situation, with the potential for political ramifications for the ruling NDC.
