Suspected gangster killed as detectives recover AK-47 stolen from Mavoko police officer

Nairobi, Kenya - A stolen AK-47 rifle, once snatched from a Mavoko police officer, has been recovered following the death of a suspected gang member in a violent shootout with detectives in Machakos County. The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the weapon was found in the Mashokani area of Matungulu Sub-County, along the Koma–Kenol Highway, where law enforcement had intercepted a gang allegedly terrorizing residents.

Upon receiving crucial information, detectives intercepted a Toyota Harrier driven by the suspects. Instead of surrendering, the gang opened fire, leading to a fierce gun battle. One suspect, armed with the AK-47, was killed during the exchange, while his accomplice, carrying a pistol, fled the scene and is currently a fugitive of the law.

The recovered AK-47, found loaded with 11 rounds of 7.62×39mm ammunition, matches the same weapon stolen in November 2025 during a violent robbery on an officer in Mavoko. The initial attack saw three armed men confront the officer while he was guarding a residence in Athi River. The assailants shot the officer in the chest and both legs before escaping with the weapon, along with his mobile phone.

As part of the ongoing investigation, detectives recovered eight mobile phones, four balaclavas, crowbars, and torches from the suspects' Toyota Harrier. The scene was thoroughly processed by Crime Scene Investigation officers, who gathered evidence for further examination. The body of the deceased suspect was transported to the Kangundo Level 4 Hospital mortuary for an autopsy.

DCI investigators are currently pursuing the escaped suspect, leaving no stone unturned in their mission to apprehend him and expose the gang's wider criminal network. The agency emphasized that the pursuit of justice continues, despite the fugitive's flight from law enforcement.
