Suriya’s Vishwanath and Sons earns over Rs 27 cr on opening day, fails to surpass Karuppu

Suriya's latest film, Vishwanath and Sons, debuted with impressive box office numbers, grossing over Rs 27 crore on its opening day in India. Directed by Suriya himself, the family drama stars the actor in the role of an elderly former Olympic pistol shooter. According to trade tracker Sacnilk, the film earned a net collection of Rs 15.15 crore domestically, with a gross of Rs 17.51 crore.

Overseas, it amassed Rs 10 crore, bringing the total worldwide gross collection to Rs 27.51 crore. On its first day, 5,034 screens across India showed the movie, with Tamil occupancy reaching 41.38%. Morning showings drew an initial 29.85% occupancy, which increased to 33.54% in the afternoon, and further climbed to 36.38% during evening screenings before a significant spike at night, when occupancy peaked at 62.69%.

Chennai led in the number of shows, with 456 playing in the city, followed by Bengaluru with 333 shows. Among regional languages, Tamil contributed the largest share to the opening-day net collection, amounting to Rs 9.15 crore, while Telugu brought in Rs 6 crore. Despite its strong start, Vishwanath and Sons' opening numbers fall short of some of the year's biggest Tamil releases, such as Vijay's Jana Nayagan, which opened with an impressive Rs 42.7 crore net.

However, the film has managed to outperform Parasakthi, which only collected Rs 12.5 crore net on its first day. With the weekend ahead, the film's trajectory will be crucial in determining whether it can convert its initial momentum into a stronger theatrical run.
