This morning, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stated that although some amendments were made to the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (Auku), students are still not satisfied with certain provisions. The Malaysian Youth Federation (Umany) and NGO Mandiri have called on the government to provide a clear timeline for repealing the Auku.

Both groups demand that the Ministry of Higher Education announce a timeline for this process, including consultations, drafting legislation, and presenting it to Parliament. Hamdin Nordin, coordinator of NGOs Mandiri, emphasized that the commitment should not be a mere promise of reform, but ultimately fulfilled. He stressed that the new framework should not revert to limiting the freedom of students in any different form or mechanism.

On the other hand, Umany urged all higher education institutions to review and reverse all disciplinary actions taken against students for expressing their views, participating in peaceful demonstrations, organizing activities, and exercising their rights. Given that the government has acknowledged the need to repeal the law framework, university management should not continue to manage students through a lax culture of control, according to Umany.
