Rescuers search for survivors of powerful Indonesia earthquake

Rescue efforts in Indonesia are underway to find survivors after a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck the island of Flores on Saturday, resulting in at least 47 deaths. The quake, which occurred shortly before 05:00 (22:00 GMT on Friday), had a depth of 15km and caused severe damage to hundreds of buildings, with aftershocks following in the hours that ensued.

The full extent of the disaster remains unknown, but preliminary reports indicate the Manggarai province has been hit the hardest, with 24 fatalities recorded. Additional deaths have been reported in East Manggarai, Sikka, Ngada, Ende, and West Manggarai provinces, with one fatality each. Over 150 houses have been severely damaged, as well as educational institutions, healthcare facilities, places of worship, offices, and public buildings.

Reports from Maumere, the largest town in Flores, show large pieces of concrete falling from the terminal building onto passengers waiting to board an inter-island ferry. Some were thrown into the sea when the gangway to a ship collapsed. Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena stated that some victims were killed in their sleep by falling rubble, while others were jolted awake and rushed to help their families.

Initially, a tsunami warning was issued, prompting around 2,000 people to evacuate, but it was later lifted as no significant sea level rise was detected. Landslides blocked access to some villages, but rescue teams worked tirelessly to free those trapped under the rubble. Ruteng, for example, assembled a temporary medical tent outside a hospital to treat earthquake victims.

Officials advise residents to remain calm and avoid coastal areas and damaged structures. Indonesia, situated along the meeting point of three major tectonic plates, is known for its susceptibility to earthquakes and volcanic activity.
