Putin says Russia, North Korea coordinating on regional security

Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Saturday that Russia and North Korea are collaborating on security and stability issues across all fronts, according to North Korean state media KCNA. The Russian leader sent a message to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, expressing confidence that their "constructive joint work" would continue on bilateral and international matters, KCNA reported.

Kim Jong Un paid tribute to Soviet soldiers who fought against Japan during World War II by visiting Pyongyang's Liberation Tower on Friday. A wreath bearing the words "We do not forget the feats of the Soviet army martyrs" was placed at the tower in Kim's name, KCNA reported. Kim stated that the "legacy of blood ties and combat friendship" between the two countries had become a "cornerstone" of their expanding relationship, KCNA reported.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also sent greetings to Kim Jong Un, underscoring the deepening ties between Moscow and Pyongyang. These developments have raised international concern over North Korea's support for Russia's war in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has repeatedly accused Pyongyang of providing Russia with missiles and ammunition and promised additional troops for the war effort.

Analysts suggest that North Korea is attempting to position Northeast Asia as a struggle between rival blocs to justify its weapons programs and secure further backing from China and Russia.
