Punjab Approves 2-Year IT Diploma for Govt Colleges

The Punjab Higher Education Department has recently launched a two-year Diploma in Information Technology (DIT) in public colleges throughout the province. This qualification is set to be regarded on par with Intermediate in Computer Science (ICS). The department has instructed government colleges to commence admissions and commence classes for the diploma during the present academic year.

The Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) Colleges has issued the program structure and fee schedule. The annual fee stands at Rs. 13,170, to be paid in two installments. DPI Colleges has directed government colleges to finalize the admission process and take requisite steps to facilitate students. The program will be conducted jointly with the Punjab Board of Technical Education.

This initiative seeks to offer students an alternative technology-focused qualification through public colleges, complemented by a pathway equivalent to ICS. The move is coupled with Punjab's broader efforts to bolster technology education at the school level. Punjab's plan to introduce artificial intelligence education for students in Grades I to V was temporarily halted due to several government schools lacking computers, internet access, and trained teachers.

While the Punjab Examination Commission (PECTAA) has finalized the curriculum framework, the necessary government notification has not been issued, hindering textbook development and classroom planning. Infrastructure remains a significant challenge, especially in rural areas where many schools lack computer laboratories, struggle with unreliable electricity, and face poor internet connectivity.

Officials are now contemplating integrating basic AI concepts into existing subjects as schools progressively improve their facilities.
