Power Relations

Power relations encompass concepts such as responsibility, reputation, and courtesy in long-distance communication-oriented relationships. The notion of power is often misunderstood as either hard or soft, but it is best understood as a synonym for responsibility. A person has power over another when they are responsible for their actions.

For instance, having power of life and death means being responsible for choosing between life and death, while having power over where to go for lunch means being responsible for choosing the dining location.

However, power is not absolute; it can be delegated. Power can be passed from one person to another, and those who hold delegated power can also delegate it further. This recursive nature of power has significant structural implications. By treating power as a category with directed arrows representing delegations, we can analyze its properties mathematically.

A category of responsibilities consists of objects (people), identity arrows (relationships with no power delegation), and transitive relations (if person A owes person B, and person B owes person C, then person A owes person C).

In practical terms, power relations are dynamic and contingent. A snapshot of power at a given moment in time may change as individuals make different choices. This highlights the importance of responsibility and the need for individuals to actively engage in shaping their power relationships.
