PM Modi on I-Day: Energy security demand of our times; no shortage of gas, fuel, urea

On the 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation, emphasizing the importance of energy security in today's world. He highlighted that, due to government initiatives, there is no shortage of gas, fuel, and urea in the country. The Prime Minister noted that urea imported at Rs 3,000 was being made available to farmers at a subsidized rate of Rs 300.

Modi spoke about the expansion of India's piped natural gas network, mentioning that while it was only available in 70 cities a decade ago, it has now been extended to 700 cities. He also informed that 1.75 crore households across the nation are presently connected to these piped gas lines.

In terms of the country's long-term energy strategy, the Prime Minister stressed that energy security is a top national priority. He stated that India is working towards achieving a nuclear power capacity of 100 gigawatts by 2047 and plans to commence work on five new nuclear reactors during the current decade.

He further highlighted that India had taken a significant step towards self-reliance in the nuclear energy sector. Earlier this year, the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR) at Kalpakkam in Tamil Nadu achieved criticality, bringing the country closer to achieving energy security through nuclear power. The Prime Minister made these remarks from the Red Fort after unfurling the national flag during the 80th Independence Day celebrations.
