PM Modi keeps it striking with red Bandhani turban on Independence Day 2026

On India's 80th Independence Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation from the historic Red Fort in New Delhi, wearing a striking traditional red Bandhani turban crafted in Rajasthan. Bandhani, an ancient dyeing technique involving thousands of hand-tied knots, is renowned in Rajasthan and Gujarat for its cultural significance, representing honor, celebration, courage, and auspicious beginnings.

Fashion designer Gautam Gupta noted that Modi's continued use of Indian textiles, including his signature turban, exemplifies his pride in Made in India craftsmanship. Modi, who has worn this turban for his Independence Day speeches for 12 consecutive years, paired his ensemble with a white kurta-pyjama, a chocolate-brown Nehru jacket, and a tricolour pocket square.

The turban, featuring the Ekdali pattern—a single dot motif—served as a visual centerpiece, symbolizing unity in diversity. Fashion designer Manish Tripathi emphasized that the Bandhej or Bandhani fabric, with its intricate craftsmanship, embodies India's rich cultural heritage and supports local artisans.
