PM Modi keeps it striking with red Bandhani turban on Independence Day 2026

On India's 80th Independence Day in 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech from the iconic Red Fort in New Delhi, wearing a distinctive red Bandhani turban. The 75-year-old leader's traditional attire included a white kurta-pyjama and a chocolate-brown Nehru jacket, with a tricolour pocket square adding to his ensemble.

Fashion designer Gautam Gupta explained that Bandhani turbans are deeply rooted in Indian culture and represent honour, celebration, courage, and auspicious beginnings. These handcrafted turbans, originating from Rajasthan and Gujarat, are renowned for their intricate tie-and-dye patterns, which showcase the rich heritage of Indian textile craftsmanship.

Gupta noted that Modi consistently dons Indian textiles, both domestically and internationally, emphasizing the importance of Made in India values. The red color of this year's turban symbolizes good luck, according to fashion expert Manish Tripathi, who has designed attire for the Lord Ram idol in Ayodhya. Tripathi highlighted that Bandhej, or Bandhani, is an ancient dyeing technique involving thousands of tiny hand-tied knots, resulting in distinctive hues.

Tripathi emphasized that Bandhej reflects India's age-old cultural traditions and craftsmanship, with each high-quality fabric taking days or even weeks to produce. This turban, particularly one featuring the Ekdali or Ekdani pattern—a single dot design—is a powerful symbol of unity in diversity. On this 80th Independence Day, Modi's refined maroon variation of the Bandhej turban serves as a tribute to the beginning of his tenure and a testament to the enduring Indian craft.
