PKR Youth backs UUCA repeal, urges students to speak up for wider reforms

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 15 — The PKR Youth wing has endorsed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's decision to repeal the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 (UUCA), but emphasized the need for broader reforms to enhance university autonomy, academic freedom, and student rights. PKR Youth chief Muhammad Kamil Abdul Munim emphasized that students must continue to speak up and act as a check on the government.

Kamil stated that the repeal should lead to stronger university autonomy, academic freedom, freedom of association, and freedom of expression, while encouraging students to manage campus differences through knowledge, argument, and dialogue. He highlighted that universities should foster graduates who are willing to question norms, challenge conventional thinking, and responsibly defend their beliefs.

Anwar's announcement, described as a significant milestone in the fight for freer and democratic campuses, recognized students should not be controlled by fear and excessive oversight. PKR Youth urged the government to pursue further institutional reforms, with students as key monitors and advocates for change.
