Kerala CM calls for pledge to build new-era Kerala on Independence Day

Thiruvananthapuram - Chief Minister V D Satheesan urged citizens to pledge for a new era of Kerala during Independence Day celebrations at the Central Stadium. The event included hoisting the national flag without the Vande Mataram song, as per the Union government's directive. Flowers rained down from an Indian Air Force helicopter as the flag was raised. Satheesan reviewed various contingents, including police, NCC, NSS, Bharat Scouts and Guides, and Student Police Cadets, before commencing his address.

Satheesan remembered those who lost their lives in recent landslides and floods, stating that the government would stand firmly by the affected families. He emphasized the need for a scientific system to tackle flood disasters, stating that united as one, they would overcome any crisis with the support of everyone.

Referring to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, Satheesan encouraged the people of Kerala to take a pledge for a new era, one that embodies compassion, tolerance, constitutional values, and progressive development. He envisioned a Kerala where people serve, show tolerance, and work hard while upholding secularism. Satheesan stressed the importance of embracing the new generation and senior citizens in this journey.

The nation, the world, and Kerala were in a critical phase, Satheesan noted, urging people to analyze problems with precision, look ahead, and support the younger generation with care. He highlighted the role of democracy as a continuous dialogue, where opposition, questioning, open discussion, and correction revitalize the system. Satheesan cautioned against creating a monoculture, a single language, belief, or lifestyle, or nurturing islets of hatred and communalism that give in to differences.
