Pirates get encouraging update on Nick Gonzales after scary exit for pitch to helmet vs. Red Sox

The Pittsburgh Pirates experienced an encouraging development concerning third baseman Nick Gonzales after a harrowing incident during a game against the Boston Red Sox. In the fifth inning, Red Sox pitcher Jovani Moran delivered a 94 mph fastball that narrowly missed Gonzalez's face and instead struck his helmet.

The ball made contact with the helmet before falling off, causing Gonzales to bend over. Fortunately, it appears the 94 mph pitch only hit the helmet, not Gonzales' face, and he left the game as a precautionary measure. Despite the alarming situation, Gonzales managed to walk around fine and recover quickly. The Pirates reported that he was being treated for a facial contusion and were considering him day-to-day, which was a positive outcome given the potential severity of the injury.

Pirates manager Don Kelly expressed concern about such incidents, stating that hits to the head area are always scary. Third baseman Jacob Gonzalez took over for Gonzales in the game, and it is likely he will be sidelined until the team confirms he is cleared of any head injuries. Nonetheless, Gonzales, who has been leading the Pirates with his .307 batting average this season, managed to avoid any significant injuries.
