Paul Finebaum Blasts Commanders’ Jayden Daniels Over LSU Rift

Paul Finebaum, an ESPN analyst, harshly criticized Washington Commanders' quarterback Jayden Daniels following a recent rift with LSU. The issue arose when LSU presented Daniels' former No. 5 jersey to sophomore cornerback DJ Pickett, violating the rights of Daniels' likeness and image. Daniels' attorney subsequently sent a cease-and-desist letter to LSU's athletic director, Verge Ausberry, demanding the school stop using any association with Daniels' name, image, or likeness as of August 5.

Finebaum, who had interviewed Daniels during his time at LSU, expressed disappointment and disbelief over the situation. He stated that Daniels' reputation among LSU Nation had plummeted since the incident, leading Finebaum to call it "the dumbest, most senseless move" he has ever witnessed. He warned Daniels to never return to LSU, predicting a hostile reception from LSU fans should he decide to attend a Tigers game there in the 2026 season.

Finebaum argued that there are plenty of copies of the Heisman Trophy, and the one given to Pickett is merely one of them.

LSU star Joe Burrow, the 2022 Heisman Trophy winner, remained noncommittal about the situation post-Bengals game, citing a lack of understanding about the circumstances. Burrow also confirmed that LSU had no plans to use Daniels' No. 9 jersey again.
