Osun election: Police arrest officer over tear gas incident

In Osun State, Nigeria, a police officer has been apprehended following an incident involving the accidental discharge of tear gas at the Registration Area Centre (RAC) in Modakeke Ward 10, Ife East Local Government Area, during the recent governorship election. The event sparked widespread concern, with videos circulating on social media depicting a confrontational atmosphere as residents accused the police of employing tear gas to interfere with the voting process.

The Osun State Police Command released a statement on Saturday, clarifying that the tear gas incident did not take place at any polling unit, but rather at the RAC. According to the command, the incident was a result of negligence on the part of an officer who was attempting to relieve himself. The command condemned the officer's actions, emphasizing that such behavior is highly unacceptable and far below the standards expected of an officer in the Nigeria Police Force.

The police dismissed allegations that the tear gas was deliberately released to intimidate voters and disrupt the electoral process. They also reminded the public that police officers assigned to polling units are prohibited from carrying arms or tactical equipment within the designated area surrounding voting points.
