Musk vil bygge verdens største fabrikk

Elon Musk, known for his love of world records, is on the verge of breaking another as he plans to build the world's largest factory. The project, called Terafab, will be located in Grimes County, Texas, and will hold the distinction of being the largest building measured by floor area. SpaceX and Tesla are joining forces to construct this mammoth facility, which will be the largest in terms of both mission and sheer size. The design of Terafab is aimed at producing a vast number of data centers at an unprecedented pace.

The factory will span over 100 million square feet, equivalent to 9.3 million square meters, surpassing the previous record holder, AvtoVaz's main factory in Russia, which covers six million square meters. Initial construction costs are estimated at $16.8 billion, with future expansions potentially increasing the total investment significantly.

Bloomberg reported that SpaceX initially planned to invest $55 billion in the project, though the cost could rise as high as $119 billion if additional construction phases are completed. The facility is expected to receive $30 million in state support from Texas, which is anticipated to create at least 3,000 jobs.

Musk emphasized the necessity of building Terafab during his initial presentation in March, stating that "we have to build the factories, or else we don't have the chips, and we need the chips, so we build Terafab." SpaceX and Tesla both promise to prioritize environmental considerations, such as using water from the Gibbons Creek reservoir instead of local groundwater and constructing dedicated wastewater treatment facilities for runoff.

Musk further explained that the collaboration between SpaceX and Tesla is driven by the need for more data centers worldwide than currently available. The chips produced will be used in Tesla's Optimus robots, self-driving Cybercab vehicles, and SpaceX's planned data centers in outer space. Additionally, Tesla has entered into a $3 million research facility partnership with Intel in Texas, where Intel will contribute expertise in chip design and production.
