Mumbai: Satkar Caterers Exits Jogeshwari Trauma Hospital Canteen Over Compliance Issues, BMC Agreement Dispute

Mumbai's Jogeshwari East Trauma Care Municipal General Hospital canteen was abruptly vacated by catering company Satkar Caterers on August 3, 2026, after failing to meet essential statutory compliance requirements. The company's withdrawal has sparked discussions around the circumstances that allowed the canteen to operate despite apparent lapses in mandatory permissions.

In a letter to the hospital's Medical Superintendent, Satkar Caterers announced its immediate termination of services, citing its inability to complete required permissions such as those under the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), health, and fire regulations. The company's spokesperson stated that obtaining an agreement letter from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was a pivotal issue.

Despite the hospital administration's denial of this claim, they acknowledged that the caterer was requested to provide all necessary licences and submitted documents, but the caterer was reportedly reluctant. Additionally, a memo regarding multiple violations was issued by the Medical Health Officer. The city official accused the catering company of occupying hospital premises without proper authorization, possibly in collusion with a former hospital worker, resulting in financial losses for the BMC over the past four to five years.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has intensified its enforcement against food safety violations, which brought the issue to the forefront. The canteen operator was asked to produce all necessary approvals as a preventive measure, leading to the discovery of various violations. Health advocate Chetan Kothari questioned the caterer's prolonged operation without proper documentation, calling for an investigation into how the canteen was allowed to run for years without the required documents.
