Mumbai: BMC Begins Evacuation Of Families From Landslide-Prone Ashok Nagar In Ghatkopar West

Mumbai, August 15, 2026: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has initiated the evacuation of families residing in the landslide-prone Ashok Nagar area of Ghatkopar West following a landslide on August 12. Around 25 to 50 families have decided to move to safer locations, while others have resisted despite repeated appeals from civic officials.

A senior civic official explained that the BMC has been urging residents to vacate the dangerous area for some time, placing warning boards before the monsoon season to alert them of the risks. The corporation has also contacted the district collector and the Airports Authority of India, as the land the settlement occupies belongs to them.

To help those willing to relocate, the BMC has set up temporary shelters at Mohili School in Sakinaka for families leaving the hazardous zone. Several families have already taken advantage of these accommodations. Despite extensive warnings about the unstable terrain, a portion of the community remains hesitant to leave their homes.

Earlier this month, a landslide at Hill No. 3 in Ashok Nagar resulted in the deaths of eight people and injuries to seven others, prompting the civic administration to intensify efforts to move families from vulnerable locations. Mumbai currently has approximately 279 landslide-prone areas spread across its 26 administrative wards.
