Monsoon rains submerge villages, fields in Myanmar

Severe monsoon flooding has inundated villages and rice fields across central Myanmar, displacing thousands of people, according to an AFP reporter and the United Nations. Cho Myint, a 53-year-old resident from Wetlet township, expressed the unbearable suffering her family endured as they were forced to flee rising floodwaters. The UN estimated that since July, the monsoon flooding in Sagaing, Rakhine, Irrawaddy, and Kachin states has affected around 390,000 people, with 230,000 of them in Sagaing alone.

Villagers from Wetlet reported that war refugees living in temporary shelters were also submerged, losing all their belongings. The flooding has devastated many people's livelihoods, as rice seedlings were swept away, and the land is now unusable for planting. Over 11,400 people, living in 3,220 households, have been relocated to flood relief centers in Sagaing.

Despite ongoing monsoon rains and dangerously high river levels, humanitarian organizations are preparing to aid the most vulnerable, but the flood damage has worsened the need for food, healthcare, clean water, and support for livelihoods.
