Mehidy claims Smith to keep Bangladesh on top in Australia Test

DARWIN: On the third day of the first Test in Darwin on Saturday, spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz claimed the crucial wicket of Australia's Steve Smith, reducing the home side to 161-4 and propelling Bangladesh closer to a historic victory. At the close of play, Australia trailed the visitors by 67 runs in the second innings, with Cameron Green on 43 and Alex Carey 19.

Hasan Mahmud, who took a career-best 6-55 in the first innings, dismissed both openers, Jake Weatherald and Travis Head, in identical fashion. As the match progressed on a favorable batting surface, Marnus Labuschagne and Smith steadied the ship, with Labuschagne scoring 31 before being bowled for a four-ball duck. Smith, often considered Australia's savior, was similarly dismissed, edging the ball to off-spinner Mehidy for a catch.

The Bangladesh captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, praised his team's character and dedication during the second innings, stating that they focused on the process rather than the outcome. In the first innings, Mehidy scored a valuable half-century for Bangladesh, who had been the underdogs before their remarkable performance. Despite being dismissed for 65 by Josh Hazlewood shortly after lunch, Mehidy's innings proved pivotal in keeping the home side in the field for 138 overs. This is Bangladesh's third attempt to secure a Test victory in Australia.
