Maskandi stars pay tribute to award-winning artist Scebi Dlamini

Maskandi musicians have paid tribute to the late award-winning artist Scebi Dlamini, describing him as a person who positively changed the trajectory of the genre. Dlamini, also known as Inkosi Yamagcokama, died in a car crash in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal, last week. He was buried alongside his colleague Sipho "Gupta" Mchunu, who also perished in the accident. Security was tight at the funeral service, attended by fans, community members, artists, and dignitaries.

Wezi Mthalane, a leader of the women's maskandi group Imithente, expressed that Dlamini's death brought back painful memories, as the leader of her group had passed away last year. She described the loss as fresh and devastating, emphasizing that it was painful to see young people pass away prematurely, as Dlamini had a bright future ahead.

KwaZulu-Natal Arts and Culture MEC Mntomuhle Khawula emphasized that Dlamini's death is a significant loss to the province's art fraternity. In 2025, the department began promoting live shows to help artists sustain themselves, and Dlamini was the first to take up the offer. His performance at the Playhouse filled the venue to capacity, resulting in an engaging show.
