Karua condemns attack on Gachagua’s convoy in Nakuru, demands probe into govt links

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's convoy faced an attack for the second day in a row in Salgaa, Nakuru County, as tensions rose over his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP). The incident unfolded on Saturday, August 15, 2026, when Gachagua's caravan traveled from Molo to Rongai. The political rally faced disruption as a group of youths blocked the Salgaa-Rongai highway, allegedly to prevent him from continuing his political activities in the region.

The former deputy president's convoy was also pelted with stones as he tried to enter Rongai. This attack occurred shortly after DCP leader criticized President William Ruto for his ongoing remarks about retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, with Gachagua accusing Kenyatta of backing the opposition. During his tour of Njoro, Elburgon, Molo, and Rongai, Gachagua urged residents to remain united and warned against efforts to divide communities ahead of the 2027 General Election.

He also accused his political opponents of attempting to intimidate him and interfere with his meetings. Gachagua further criticized the government for failing to ensure sufficient security for opposition political engagements. "Wakijaribu kutisha sisi, ati lazima tumfuate Ruto, ati kwa sababu jamii yetu iko kila pahali Kenya..." he stated.

The former deputy president also accused the government of not providing adequate protection for political meetings, noting, "Alikuwa anatafuta vijana ati wakuje wapige Rigi G, ati asifike Njoro..." Amid rising political competition in Nakuru, various political factions are vying for support as they prepare for the 2027 elections.

Gachagua also criticized President Ruto for repeatedly mentioning retired President Uhuru Kenyatta, claiming that Kenyatta is allegedly supporting the opposition. "Hakuna kitu amefanya. Sasa yeye anaruka, hataki tuongee hiyo maneno, anataka kuleta maneno ya Uhuru Kenyatta," Gachagua noted. The latest incident follows a campaign truck belonging to DCP being stoned and vandalized in Pembroke, Gilgil, Nakuru County, while en route to a campaign event.

Gachagua condemned the attack, accusing police leadership of not providing adequate security during political activities. He said the truck was attacked with firearms and tear gas. The DCP's economic adviser, Peter Mbae, also condemned the incident, alleging that the attackers were "state-sponsored goons." However, the National Police Service denied allegations that its officers collaborate with criminal gangs, stating that any officer found working with criminals would be treated as such.

The latest confrontation in Salgaa is expected to intensify concerns over political violence and the safety of campaign activities as political parties gear up for the 2027 General Election.
