Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon kill nine people including three children, health ministry says

Lebanese state media reported that an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon early Saturday claimed the lives of seven individuals, marking the highest casualty count since a June peace deal. The national news agency (NNA) stated that Israel intensified its assaults on the southern region, alleging a plane-launched strike on a residence near the village of Ansar, resulting in deaths of seven and injuries to three others.

The residence was demolished, and emergency responders were working to retrieve the injured and transport them to hospitals. The conflict in Lebanon began in March when Hezbollah launched rocket attacks on Israel in support of Iran, to which Israel responded with intense airstrikes and a ground invasion that has reportedly resulted in over 4,300 casualties.

Although hostilities have notably decreased following the signing of a US-Iran memorandum of understanding and a US-sponsored agreement between Lebanon and Israel in June, intermittent Israeli strikes continue to occur, frequently resulting in casualties and widespread destruction of civilian structures in southern locales. NNA mentioned that a strike was conducted in the valley between Ansar and Zarariyeh, the initial attack at this altitude since the ceasefire two months ago.

Additionally, they reported Israeli warplanes carried out multiple airstrikes targeting the Ali al-Taher ridge, a strategic hill overlooking the Nabatieh area, and that Israeli forces also conducted shelling in the town of Bint Jbeil near the border. Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem criticized Lebanese authorities for imposing the framework deal on the country's military, alleging that it exposes the forces to Israeli harassment and pressure rather than safeguarding them.

Human Rights Watch called for the United Nations to maintain an international peacekeeping force in Lebanon once its current mandate concludes, citing the monitors as a crucial deterrent against civilian casualties and human rights violations.
