Iowa senator says Trump’s new tariffs should be a wake-up call for Canada

DES MOINES - Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley expressed concern that President Donald Trump's proposed tariffs on Canadian goods should act as a "wake-up call" for Canada to make changes. In an interview at the Iowa State Fair, Grassley stated that he believes Trump is using tariffs as a lever, despite supporting free trade. Grassley emphasized the importance of not allowing trade negotiations to undermine the CUSMA agreement, which is currently under review by the United States.

Canadian officials have escalated trade talks with the U.S. following Trump's executive order to impose tariffs on various Canadian goods. While the talks are deemed "constructive" by U.S. Trade Representative Jamie Greer, no deal appears imminent before the tariffs take effect. Grassley reiterated his support for CUSMA and hoped for continued friendly relations with Canada.
