In Canada's largest honey-producing region, beekeepers brace for U.S. tariffs

Senator Chuck Grassley, a key backer of President Donald Trump's agenda, has warned Canada that U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods should serve as a "wake-up call" to make some changes. Grassley, speaking at the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines, said the president is likely using tariffs as a lever during negotiations. While supporting free trade, Grassley emphasized that tough negotiations cannot undermine the CUSMA trade agreement.

Canadian officials have ramped up talks with U.S. counterparts after Trump signed an executive order imposing 50% tariffs on various Canadian goods starting Aug. 19. The administration claims the duties are in response to Canadian bans on U.S. liquor, supply-managed dairy, and vehicle quotas. Despite the tough stance, U.S. Trade Representative Jamie Skelton called the talks "constructive," but no deal looks imminent.

Unlike other Trump tariffs, these have no exemptions for compliant goods. CUSMA, negotiated during the first Trump administration, replaced the old NAFTA. The administration announced they wouldn't extend CUSMA, triggering an annual review process that could lead to its expiration if no extension is agreed upon within a decade. Grassley has long advocated for keeping CUSMA in place and accused Canada of failing to honor its commitments to dairy access. He expressed confidence in maintaining friendly relations with Canada, despite the trade tensions.
