If you’re naughty, we will know it, mayor warns as Kota Kinabalu adds 1,600 CCTV cameras to catch vandals

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 15 — Kota Kinabalu's City Hall plans to install 1,600 CCTV cameras across the city in an effort to boost surveillance and safeguard public assets from vandalism, Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Sabin Samitah announced during the unveiling of the "Remembering Australia Place" mural. The mural, commemorating the historical ties between Australia and Sabah, was produced by local arts organization Pillars of Sabah and aims to tell the story of the friendship and people-to-people connections between the two regions.

The installation of the CCTV cameras is expected to begin soon, with the project funded and supported by various stakeholders. Mayor Sabin also discussed the upcoming Kota Kinabalu International Mayors’ Dialogue 2026, a gathering set to take place in October that will bring together city leaders and policymakers from around the world to discuss urban development and cooperation.
