IBB: How Wealthy Nigerians Sponsored Successful Military Coups

Former Nigerian military ruler Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida has revealed that wealthy civilians played a crucial role in funding and facilitating successful military coups in the country's history. Speaking in an interview for his 85th birthday, Babangida, who ruled Nigeria from 1985 to 1993, stated that no successful coup had taken place without civilian involvement, particularly that of wealthy Nigerians.

Babangida recounted a painful incident during his tenure when his close associate, then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Major General Mamman Vatsa, was accused of involvement in a 1985 coup plot. The alleged plot, which Babangida believed had been orchestrated by Vatsa and another general, Major General Mohammed Gado Nasko, was investigated by a military commission. While Nasko was exonerated, Vatsa was found guilty and executed.

The former leader emphasized that the decision to execute Vatsa was beyond his control, as military law dictated the punishment for such offenses. Despite his personal connection to Vatsa, Babangida could not intervene to save his friend due to the legal framework in place at the time.

Babangida's remarks come as Nigeria grapples with ongoing economic and security challenges. He encouraged citizens to maintain hope and support President Bola Tinubu's administration, expressing optimism that the government's ongoing efforts will eventually lead to positive outcomes for the nation.
