I stood up for a fellow citizen. I would do it all over again

When I witness injustice in my community, I feel compelled to take a stand. In January, while celebrating Republic Day at a friend's shop, I observed a group of Bajrang Dal men harassing an elderly Hindu shop owner named Vakeel Ahmed over the name of his establishment. I stepped in to intervene and identified myself as Mohammad Deepak, emphasizing our shared Indian identity.

However, the Bajrang Dal members subsequently posted on Instagram, calling for "Hindu" men to teach me a lesson. A group of these men even traveled from Dehradun to Kotdwar to threaten and abuse my family in front of my gym. As a father of a five-year-old daughter and a husband, I worry about their safety and the impact on my family's well-being.

In the aftermath of the incident, my daughter missed several weeks of school, and my gym, which was once bustling with 150-200 members, has dwindled to just 40-42. The owners of the gym are struggling with loan repayments and school fees for my daughter. Despite the threats and intimidation, I firmly believe that my actions were justified and would repeat them if faced with a similar situation.

The overwhelming support I received from people of all faiths during this difficult time has strengthened my resolve to fight against intolerance and hatred. Even though I have faced harassment from both the Bajrang Dal and the police, I have also witnessed a growing number of individuals standing up for what is right, whether through social media or in person.

The deepening Hindu-Muslim divide and the misuse of government power for political gain are deeply concerning. However, I remain hopeful that by speaking out against injustice, we can help heal the wounds of our nation and restore the dignity and freedom that all citizens deserve.
