Hurricane Lala lashes Hawaii with heavy rain, strong winds

Hurricane Lala struck Hawaii's Big Island with torrential rain and strong winds on Saturday, prompting warnings of hazardous flooding and mudslides. The storm intensified to a Category 1 hurricane, with winds reaching up to 120kmph. Hawaii County, which includes the Big Island, received a hurricane warning, while the other major islands were under a tropical storm warning.

Forecasters predicted 25cm to 50cm of rain, potentially reaching 25 inches, which would cause life-threatening flooding, especially in areas with steep terrain. A storm surge of one to three feet and large, dangerous waves were also anticipated. Swells from the storm would continue through the weekend, leading to hazardous surf and rip current conditions.

Governor Josh Green declared a state of emergency to ensure Hawaii had enough resources to prepare. Residents were advised to clear gutters, move valuables off the ground, and remove tree limbs that could harm their properties.
