Hunt wins third gold as Asher-Smith makes history

Amy Hunt secured her third gold medal in just six days at the European Championships, adding to her victories in the 100m and 200m events. The quartet of Great Britain's sprint stars clinched the host nation's second gold medal of the competition, setting the stage for a historic final on Sunday. Dina Asher-Smith, meanwhile, achieved her seventh gold medal at the championships, tying the record previously held by Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen and Croatian discus thrower Sandra Elkasevic.

Following her bronze medal finish in the 200m on Thursday, Asher-Smith equalled Polish sprinter Irena Szewinska's overall record tally of 10 medals at the championships. The GB women's quartet completed the race in 42.05 seconds, more than a second ahead of Switzerland. Earlier, 100m champion Romell Glave led the men's quartet to gold in 38.45 seconds, with Jeremiah Azu, Louie Hinchliffe and 200m silver medallist Zharnel Hughes rounding out the team.

Britain's medal total rose to 12, including six golds, as they looked to close the gap on table-topping Italy, who have won 17 medals so far. The event marked a symbolic moment, with Asher-Smith's seamless baton handover to Hunt signaling a significant milestone for the British sprinter, who aims to become the first athlete to win four medals at a single edition of the championships.
