Deshaun Watson Turns Up the Heat on Shedeur Sanders in Browns' QB Battle

The Cleveland Browns suffered a 34-10 defeat to the Chicago Bears during their preseason opener at Soldier Field on Saturday. While much focus was on the Bears' efficient quarterback play, the battle between the Browns' quarterbacks, Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders, has become a focal point. Watson took the field for the first half, executing a largely clean performance, completing 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards and a 98.2 passer rating.

He was sacked once early in the second quarter and lost a crucial fumble, but overall, it was a strong showing. Shedeur Sanders took over in the second half, but his play lacked the sharpness shown by Watson. He went 6 of 11 for 79 yards, recorded no touchdowns, and threw an interception, along with an early fumble that he recovered.

Third-string quarterback Dillon Gabriel entered the game in the fourth quarter and completed the game. Head coach Todd Monken has indicated that Watson and Sanders will alternate starts, giving Sanders another opportunity against the Buffalo Bills at home in Cleveland next week. Despite the loss, it is evident that Watson currently has the upper hand in the race for the starting quarterback position.

Other offensive players also made an impact, with first-round rookie receiver KC Concepcion recording three catches for 27 yards, a 14-yard rushing touchdown, and a 31-yard punt return. Second-year running back Dylan Sampson led all receivers with two catches for 43 yards, while undrafted rookie free agent Davon Booth emerged as the top rusher with 53 yards on just four carries.

As the Browns prepare to face the New England Patriots on Thursday, Aug. 27, the outcome on the quarterback position should become more apparent.
