How reservation, seat rotation are weakening political family control in Rajasthan’s Zila Parishads

Rajasthan's Zila Parishad elections have introduced a lottery system for seat allocation, which has disrupted the traditional control exerted by influential political families. In districts like Nagaur, Jaisalmer, and Sikar, these families have historically nominated their own candidates for the Zila Pramukh position. However, this year, the demographics have shifted with reservations for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Classes.

Consequently, these political families will need to adapt their strategies, possibly leaning on trusted supporters to secure the positions. In Nagaur, the Scheduled Caste seat has replaced the traditional Jat families' influence, while in Jaisalmer, the Muslim and Meghwal communities, which have the most votes, are now in contention.

Similarly, in Sikar, an OBC woman is likely to be appointed as the Zila Pramukh, dismantling the former dominance of Prem Singh Bajor's family. These changes in seat allocation are causing a ripple effect in the political landscape, forcing families to reassess their strategies and search for new candidates who align with their political agendas.
