Ghanaian evacuee from South Africa dies shortly after arrival

A Ghanaian resident who had been evacuated from South Africa passed away shortly after landing at Accra International Airport. This occurred as part of the government's ongoing evacuation initiative in response to recent xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals, including Ghanaians. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Friday, August 14, 2026, that the individual was pronounced dead at the airport's Emergency Medical Reception at 6:55 p.m. He was among the 50 Ghanaians who arrived on an Air Tanzania flight from South Africa at around 5:50 p.m. The deceased had reportedly begun experiencing health issues approximately 30 minutes prior to the flight's arrival in Accra.

A medical team on standby at the airport quickly responded upon arrival and attempted to stabilize his condition. Despite their efforts, the man was declared dead by doctors at 6:55 p.m. The Ministry stated that they are working to formally inform the deceased's family about the incident and that his remains have been sent to the Police Hospital for an autopsy.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that they would provide additional information once they have spoken with the bereaved family.
