Ghana police arrest Nigerian, kill 2 in alleged foiled bank robbery

The Ghana Police Service has apprehended a Nigerian national, Augustine Okechuku Maazi, and killed two other suspected members of a robbery gang following an intelligence-led operation aimed at thwarting an alleged plan to attack banks in Accra's Labone area. The incident, which occurred on Thursday, was reported at 10:45am, prompting the police to deploy a response team to the location.

Upon arrival, officers discovered vehicles parked near GCB Bank, Ecobank, and Zenith Bank. One of the vehicles attempted to flee, but police pursued it, resulting in the arrest of Maazi while another occupant escaped. A shootout ensued involving the second vehicle, leading to the deaths of two suspects. A fourth suspect is believed to have escaped during the operation, and a manhunt has been initiated to locate him.

The police recovered two vehicles linked to the suspects, as well as a blow pistol. Maazi is currently in police custody and is cooperating with investigators. The bodies of the deceased suspects have been sent to the morgue for preservation, identification, and autopsy. GCB Bank refuted claims that its Labone branch was robbed or targeted during the incident, asserting that neither its premises nor operations were compromised.
