An earthquake of magnitude 7.7 struck eastern Indonesia on Saturday, causing significant damage and casualties according to emergency officials. Initial reports indicate 20 deaths, six injuries, and two people still trapped. Gabenor of Nusa Tenggara Timur, Melki Laka Lena, stated that several buildings and homes were damaged, while some roads were blocked or cut off due to landslides.

The total extent of the destruction is yet to be assessed as authorities continue to gather data. Several flights to the Nusa Tenggara Timur region were canceled due to the aftermath. The General Consulate of China in Denpasar issued a notice on Saturday morning, urging Chinese nationals, particularly travelers in Labuan Bajo, to stay vigilant and monitor local earthquake and disaster alerts closely, as well as avoid coastal areas due to the risk of aftershocks and tsunamis.

The earthquake was centered near Mbay in Nagekeo district and triggered a tsunami warning, which was later withdrawn by the Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency. The rescue teams are still assessing the number of casualties and damage in the affected areas, with further developments expected as the rescue operations continue.
