On Saturday, an earthquake measuring 7.7 in magnitude struck off the coast of eastern Indonesia, near the island of Flores, resulting in at least 20 deaths and numerous injuries. The Main Rescue Agency in Maumere, Indonesia reported 20 fatalities, six injuries and two people still missing. Governor Melki Laka Lena of Nusa Tenggara Timur stated that several buildings and homes were destroyed, while several roads were blocked or cut off due to landslides.

The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, as some flights to the Nusa Tenggara Timur region have been cancelled. The General Consulate of China in Denpasar issued an alert on Saturday, urging Chinese nationals, particularly travelers in Labuan Bajo, to remain vigilant and closely monitor local earthquake and disaster warnings, while avoiding coastal areas due to the risk of aftershocks and tsunamis.

The earthquake occurred early on Saturday near the city of Mbay in Nagekeo District, triggering a tsunami warning that was later cancelled by the Indonesian Meteorological, Climatological and Geophysical Agency. The rescue teams continue to evaluate the number of casualties and damage in the affected area, with further developments expected as the rescue operations continue.
