First Lady: I Remain Committed To Giving Errant Girls Second Chance At Formal Education

Deji Elumoye delivered an account of First Lady Oluremi Tinubu's commitment to providing errant girls a second chance at formal education. The event honored the inauguration of a renovated Alternative High School for Girls in Agboju, Lagos. The First Lady, representing the Vice President, emphasized the importance of second chances for girls whose education had been interrupted due to life's challenges.

The school, inaugurated in 2007, offers courses in agriculture, physics, biology, cosmetology, garment-making, hairdressing, catering, home economics, library, and ICT. The renovation aimed at improving the learning environment was made possible by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC). Tinubu expressed delight at the improvements and praised UBEC's efforts to establish such schools nationwide, including a new one in Ikorodu, Lagos State.

She set a goal of establishing at least one Alternative High School for Girls in each of Lagos State's three senatorial districts. At the ceremony, the First Lady encouraged students not to let their past define their future, urging them to work hard to achieve their dreams. Lagos State Governor's wife, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, highlighted the school's role in restoring dignity and creating opportunities for young women, stating that educating a girl benefits her family, community, and nation.

Dr. Aisha Garba, Executive Secretary of UBEC, reaffirmed the commission's commitment to providing alternative education with skills development across the country, noting that the Ikorodu school is under construction and will soon be inaugurated.
