Filly Luster captures 167th running of the King’s Plate

Filly Luster triumphed in the 167th running of the King’s Plate, securing a commanding 7 1/4-length victory over the competition. The filly, a 1-5 favorite, had previously claimed a dominant 5 1/2-length win in the $750,000 Woodbine Oaks on July 19. Jockey John Velazquez, renowned for his exceptional performance in the Triple Crown races, rode Luster to his second Plate crown, with his first victory also coming aboard a filly, Wonder Gadot in 2018.

Velazquez, who has ridden Luster to a stellar 5 1/2-length triumph in the Oaks, expressed his gratitude, stating, "I’ve been very lucky and very blessed with the fillies." Trainer Josie Carroll extended her winning streak, capturing her fourth Plate victory and first since 2020, following Edenwold (2006) and Inglorious (2011). The highly anticipated 167th King’s Plate showcased a field of 12 horses, with Military Time finishing second, ridden by Fraser Aebly.

Luster, drawing the No. 1 post in Tuesday's draw, started comfortably, settling into fourth behind Fire and Wine, Very Special, and Magical Factor. Velazquez adeptly maneuvered Luster to second just before the turn, ultimately leading by a quarter-mile to go before asserting her dominance at the stretch call. The horse completed the race in 2:02.01, just shy of Moira’s track record of 2:01.48.

Velazquez acknowledged his strategic decision to move Luster out of potential trouble at the start, emphasizing the importance of positioning himself and Luster to capitalize on their strengths. The race's outcome prompted Carroll to reflect on the anxious moments leading up to the finish line, crediting Velazquez’s masterful handling of Luster throughout the race.

Part-owner Andrew Rosen praised Carroll's foresight, noting her confident prediction of Luster's success. With two consecutive victories, Luster's prospects in the Triple Crown races, particularly the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on Sept. 7, have intensified. While Carroll remains tight-lipped about Luster's future plans, initial indications suggest she will focus on savoring this momentous victory.

Luster's impressive performance translated to a fifth win in six career starts, with her earnings surpassing $1.093 million following her victory in the King’s Plate.
