‘Enough of Gandhian methods’: Jharkhand students give Hemant Soren govt Aug 18 deadline, threaten CM residence siege

Jharkhand student protesters have escalated their campaign against the Hemant Soren government, demanding action by August 18 or facing a mass march on August 20 to besiege the Chief Minister's residence. The agitation, which has been ongoing for 22 days, centers on allegations of irregularities in recruitment examinations and a call for transparency in the state's recruitment system.

Student leader Ravindra Paswan declared the movement would enter a more aggressive phase if the government failed to respond to their demands. Paswan invoked revolutionary figure Bhagat Singh, stating that protesters were no longer willing to rely on peaceful methods and were prepared to face bullets for their cause. The protesters have given the government a deadline to cancel the JSSC-CGL and JPSC 11th–13th examinations, initiate an independent investigation, and order a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation or retired judges.

Failure to meet the demands could trigger a larger mobilisation on August 20. Piyush Kumar, another student leader, announced burning effigies of the Jharkhand government, Chief Minister Hemant Soren, and political figures supporting them. The protests have also drawn attention to the hunger strike by JLKM leader Devendra Mahto, who has been on a 14-day hunger strike, alleging police prevented him from attending protest marches.

The Jharkhand government has acknowledged concerns over the recruitment process and assured students that allegations would be investigated impartially. However, the protesters remain firm in their demands, urging systemic changes to restore public confidence in the state's recruitment system.
