Disneys Oswald the Lucky Rabbit is getting his own TV miniseries

Before Donald Duck, Goofy, or even Mickey Mouse existed, there was Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Now, this silent figure from Disney's early days is set to star in a three-part TV miniseries on Disney+. At the recent D23 fan event, Disney revealed that Oswald will take center stage in a live-action animated series created by Jon Favreau.

The cast features a star-studded ensemble including Albert Brooks, Amy Sedaris, Kathryn Hahn, Steve Martin, Al Madrigal, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Mykal-Michelle Harris, and Ryder Allen. It's a long journey for Oswald, who was first conceived by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks in 1927 for Universal Pictures. Oswald starred in over twenty theatrical shorts in the late 1920s before Universal took the character away from Disney in 1928.

This prompted Disney to create Mickey Mouse as a replacement, a move that ultimately made Mickey more popular than Oswald, who disappeared from the public eye by the 1950s. In 2006, Disney regained the rights to Oswald in a trade with NBCUniversal, receiving Oswald's trademark and the rights to Oswald-era animated films in exchange for NBCUniversal's play-by-play announcer, Al Michaels, for NBC's Sunday Night Football.

Since then, Oswald has had cameo appearances in animated shows, Disney parks, and video games like Epic Mickey. Now, after decades of obscurity, Oswald is finally getting his moment in the spotlight with a Disney miniseries that blends hand-drawn 2D animation with live-action. The miniseries is set to air on Disney+ in February 2027.
