Democrats disagree over abolishing or reforming ICE at DNC meeting

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin presided over a debate at the DNC Summer Meeting in Austin, Texas, regarding the future of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The meeting saw the approval of contrasting messages: some Democrats advocated for the abolition of ICE, while others called for its reform. This disagreement reflected the party's divided stance on the issue as it heads into the midterms.

The DNC also endorsed policies calling for "concrete reforms" of ICE and for its abolition. The issue of ICE has been a rallying cry for progressive Democrats since 2018, and has recently gained attention following fatal shootings by the agency in July. Michele Johnson, a DNC member from Louisiana, proposed the measure to abolish ICE, emphasizing the need for Democrats to take a clear stance.

However, not all DNC members were on board; Yvonne Reeves-Chong voted against the measure, arguing that it would only resonate with a segment of the party's base while alienating others. The vote, while not binding, reflects the party's differing views on a major issue and will influence candidates and lawmakers as they determine their positions.
