Dawn Staley says 1996 Olympic team entering Naismith Hall of Fame 'long overdue'

The 1996 U.S. Olympic women's basketball team, comprising legends like Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes, and Cynthia Cooper, has finally been awarded a place in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Dawn Staley, the team's coach, expressed her joy at this recognition, stating that it's long overdue. This team not only won the first Olympic gold medal in 1996 but also secured eight consecutive gold medals, setting a record for the longest streak in any team sport.

Their victory paved the way for the establishment of the WNBA in 1997, which is now thriving in its 30th season.
