Construction workers find $10 million gold stash in renovations

Construction workers in Belgium unearthed a treasure trove of gold worth over $10 million during renovations in Dendermonde, an eastern town in the Flemish region. The discovery came about when the workers found a significant amount of gold bars and coins while working on a house belonging to a local charity, CAW East-Flanders. The local police were immediately informed of the find, which was later shared on the department's Facebook page with a photo of the gold bars and coins.

Police spokespersons reported that the gold bars and coins were valued at approximately nine million euros (around $10.4 million). The stash was discovered bricked into the cellar walls while the workers were laying a sewerage pipe for the site. One of the workers, who spoke to the Belgian news outlet VRT under the pseudonym Kobe, expressed disbelief at the unexpected find. "We certainly hadn't expected to find gold," he said.

Police swiftly inventoried and secured the gold in a high-security government vault. The discovery has attracted the attention of several treasure hunters, according to a police post on Facebook that changed its profile picture to a gold coin. The police advised the curious to stay away from the fenced-off construction site, cautioning that it would be futile to pursue the treasure.

The legal ownership of the gold stash remains unclear, leaving the question of who might ultimately benefit from the find unresolved. The police expressed hope that the treasure would be returned to the right hands.
