20 killed, homes ruined and a tsunami alert: What we know of the Indonesia earthquake

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia on Saturday, resulting in at least 38 deaths and widespread destruction. The quake, which occurred in Flores region, was followed by landslides and a tsunami alert. Initial reports indicate that 20 bodies were found due to building collapses and landslides in several regions.

The death toll has since risen to 38, with more fatalities feared. At least six people were injured, and two are missing, believed to be trapped under mudslides. Over 2,000 villagers fled to temporary shelters due to the earthquake's intensity. Power outages hampered communication and search efforts. The Indonesian geophysics agency BMKG reported several aftershocks following the initial tremor, with the earthquake's epicenter at a depth of 10 kilometers.

This earthquake, the deadliest since a 7.4-magnitude quake off North Maluku in April, marks a significant event for Indonesia, known for its frequent tremors due to its location on the Pacific Ring of Fire. The last 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Flores occurred in 1992, resulting in around 2,500 deaths.
