Colombia president asks US to suspend tariffs over quake

Colombia's newly elected President Abelardo de la Espriella has requested the United States to temporarily suspend tariffs imposed on Colombian goods in response to the devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake that struck the country. The US had raised tariffs on Colombian products from 10% to 12.5% in late July, with exceptions for coffee and oil.

De la Espriella, speaking via X, expressed his concerns over the economic difficulties faced by local businesses due to the quake's aftermath. He thanked President Trump for his condolences and a friendly conversation, adding that Colombia faces a significant challenge in rebuilding from the disaster. The earthquake destroyed over 13,000 homes and claimed nearly 300 lives in the western cities of Cali and Pereira.
