Colombia leader asks Trump to suspend tariffs over quake

Colombia's newly elected president, Abelardo de la Espriella, has urged US President Donald Trump to suspend tariffs imposed on Colombian goods in the wake of a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake. De la Espriella made the request during a brief conversation with Trump, who expressed condolences over the loss of life and property damage.

The US tariffs on Colombian products were raised from 10% to 12.5% in late July, excluding coffee and oil. De la Espriella highlighted that the increased tariffs have put Colombian business owners through a difficult period, exacerbated by the economic fallout from the earthquake. Speaking to Trump, De la Espriella detailed the immense challenge ahead for rebuilding Colombia, which he inherited with a dire economic situation.

Trump responded with kindness during their 10-minute discussion, according to De la Espriella. The Colombian leader noted that he informed Trump about the urgent need for assistance in rebuilding the country following the quake that left nearly 300 people dead and destroyed around 13,000 homes. Following the meeting, De la Espriella pledged to form a military alliance with the US and Israel to bolster his fight against guerrilla groups.
