CM announces ₹1.5 lakh crore infrastructure boost to make Assam developed by 2047

Assam's Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a combined investment of ₹1.5 lakh crore by the state and Centre to develop infrastructure and transform Assam into a developed state by 2047, aligning with India's aim. In his Independence Day speech, Sarma unveiled a ₹50,000 crore project by the state government to enhance basic infrastructure and facilities in rural and urban areas.

He also sought ₹1 lakh crore from the Centre over the next five years for infrastructure development. Additionally, the CM created eight more co-districts, bringing the total to 58, and announced the formation of 78 co-districts for administrative convenience. Sarma highlighted the state's campaign against child marriages, registering 12,196 cases and arresting 93 individuals, and pledged to take action against polygamy.

The government will deduct 20% of the salary of state employees found in polygamous relationships and transfer the amount to the first wife's account. Sarma also announced ₹100 crore for Cotton University's 125th anniversary, ₹1 lakh each to 10,000 progressive farmers, and the formation of a new youth empowerment and development department.

The CM assured permanent rehabilitation for flood-affected people, thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Centre for their assistance. During the census exercise, Sarma appealed for Assamese to be listed as mother tongue for those who have settled in Assam, except for Barak Valley residents, indigenous communities, and tribes.
