'Broken and grateful': Alice Springs farewells Kumanjayi Little Baby

Alice Springs, located in the heart of Australia's Red Centre, mourned the loss of five-year-old Warlpiri girl Kumanjayi Little Baby on 15 August. Her body was discovered on 30 April, following her disappearance from Old Timers town camp, south of the city. The community came together in a search effort that was deemed one of the largest in Northern Territory history.

Jefferson Lewis, a 47-year-old man, was later charged with Kumanjayi's alleged murder and two additional offenses. At her funeral, Warlpiri Elder and family spokesperson Robin Granites shared that pink was Kumanjayi's favorite color, as it reminded them of her beloved clothing and the colors of the sky. The funeral service emphasized Kumanjayi's role as Mum's baby and the immense impact she had on her community.

Despite the sorrow, the community also expressed gratitude for Kumanjayi's presence in their lives. The week after her death, nationwide candlelight vigils were held, with one in Alice Springs described as unprecedented in its community spirit. The funeral service, held on 15 August, was followed by an intimate burial service. Notable figures, including Liberal Senator Jacinta Nampajinpa Price, Minister for Indigenous Australians Malarndirri McCarthy, and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives, attended the event.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese visited Alice Springs in May, offering his condolences to Kumanjayi's family and expressing solidarity with the nation in their grief.
